Laddovej otvára sériu Panstvá Yorkshiru a sleduje mladú Cassandru Haleovú, ktorá po smrti pani Dentonovej odchádza do starobylého panstva Briarton Park pátrať po svojom pôvode. Na panstve jej pomáha vdovec James Warrington, medzi nimi sa postupne rozvíja citový vzťah, zatiaľ čo zápletku skomplikuje vražda právneho zástupcu, ktorý mohol dokázať Cassandrin dedičný nárok. Recenzentka oceňuje, že autorka pridala na akčnosti a vyšetrovaní, ubrala zbytočné vnútorné súboje a moralizovanie a výsledkom je prepracovaná zápletka s dobrým spádom, ktorú označuje za najlepšiu knihu autorky doteraz. Kniha stále používa autorkinu typickú šablónu (osamelá hlavná hrdinka, vdovec s deťmi, stratené dedičstvo), no číta sa veľmi dobre a prináša aj niekoľko príjemných prekvapení.
